Patchogue, N. Y. – Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the St. Joseph's College's women soccer team (1-5-1) were unsuccessful in holding off the visiting Sage College Gators (3-2-1). Sage toppled the Golden Eagles, 3-1, giving SJC their first Skyline Conference defeat.
The Lady Eagles' first and only goal came at 30:12 after SJC captain Jennifer Martino (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Bellport), buried a pass from Jessica Cordano (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot).
Following Martino's goal, the Gators responded in clawing fashion netting three unanswered goals past SJC's freshman goalkeeper Hannah Steffans (Northport, N.Y. / Smithtown Christian). During her first career start, Steffens recorded four saves against the Gator's high-powered offense.
The Golden Eagles offense had a strong outing by outshooting Sage 19-10. However, SJC's persistence wasn't enough to crack the Gator's defense.
Although the Lady Eagles are on a two-game losing streak, they look to the future as they travel to New Jersey to face off against Montclair State University (6-1) on September 24 at 8:00 p.m.
