Lady Eagles Spike Old Westbury, Maritime

Lady Eagles Spike Old Westbury, Maritime

Old Westbury, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (16-11, 6-2 Skyline) dominated both opponents on Saturday. The Eagles shutout Maritime (2-27, 0-9 Skyline), 3-0, then St. Joseph's handled the hosts Old Westbury (6-16, 2-6 Skyline), 3-1.

In the first match of the day, the Golden Eagles shredded Maritime. They won the three sets 25-10, 25-14, and 25-12. Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage)  had an outstanding match. She led the Eagles with 21 assists, and added ten digs along with six kills. Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./Centereach) led the Eagles with 11 kills and Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y./Bellport) had 11 digs.

The Old Westbury Panthers proved to be a more difficult opponent. They were right behind the Eagles for most of the first set. The game was tied 13-13 when the Lady Eagles spread their wings and flew away for a 25-16 victory. St. Joseph's didn't allow the Panthers to stay close in game two. The Golden Eagles crushed the Panthers 25-11. It seemed as if St. Joseph's was going to run away with another shutout but the Panthers kept fighting. After a back-and-forth start to the third set, the Eagles fell apart late. Old Westbury were hoping to even the match in the fourth set. They kept the game close and managed to tie it up at 19 but three straight points by St. Joseph's put them within two points of winning the match. Old Westbury climbed back into the game 22-21 but that was as far as they would go. The Eagles took home the victory 25-22.

Tierney once again led the Eagles with 29 assists, giving her a combined 50 on the day. The assists were just one aspect of her tremendous stat line on Saturday of 50 assists, 24 digs, and 10 kills. Courtney Wickline added 14 digs, giving her 25 on the day. Tiffany Willms (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) had 13 kills and 10 digs against Old Westbury.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Yeshiva this Wednesday for the last Skyline Conference game of the regular season.
