Women’s Volleyball Opens Season with Pair of Losses

Madison, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball team opened its 2017 campaign with a pair of 3-0 losses to Moravian and FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ on Saturday afternoon.

The losses ensure the Golden Eagles open the season with an 0-2 record as Moravian improves to 2-5 and the FDU to 3-1.

Moravian 3, SJC 0

SJC would go up 4-2 early in the first set but six-straight points from Moravian allowed the Greyhounds to pull ahead and surge to a 25-13 victory.

The Golden Eagles would stay within striking distance early in the second, but after falling behind 15-13 SJC succumbed to a 7-0 Moravian run before losing the set 25-16. More of the same in the third frame as a mid-set run by the Greyhounds clinched 25-14 set and 3-0 match wins for Moravian.

Freshman Kaitlin Williams led the Golden Eagles with a team-best five kills. Setters Jessica Monteserrato and Brionna Silva both dished out five assists apiece, and junior Danielle Senecal shared a game-high 12 digs with Moravian's Jean Markovic.

FDU-Florham 3, SJC 0

Down 13-9 in the first set SJC fell victim to a crippling 11-0 run that allowed the hosts to march to a 25-10 opening-set win. The second set would play out similarly with the Devils storming to a 19-0 run to clinch a 25-5 victory.

In the third, SJC would come as close as 4-3 as FDU completed the sweep with a 25-16 win.

Senior Morgan Tiska's four kills were best for a team that hit -.034 in the match. Monteserrato collected a team-best seven assists and Senecal powered the defense with 11 digs.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, September 11 when they host CCNY for a non-conference bout at 7:00 pm inside the Danzi Center. Live video and stats available here.
