The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) women's volleyball team dropped a Skyline Conference matchup in a hard-fought battle in the Danzi Center on Monday evening.
Top performers
- Sophomore Jackie Wolf led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills while adding eight digs
- Junior Madison Gremli finished with eight kills
- Setter Tara Langford dished 32 assists with five service aces
- Sophomore Deirdre Carney finished with six kills and a match-best five block assists with a solo block
- Libero Kayla Martin collected a match-best 17 digs
How it happened
- The Golden Eagles built an early 7-2 lead in the opening set, but a USMMA timeout prompted the visitors to go on a 10-1 run (12-8) and went on to claim a 25-18 win
- Set two saw the two teams deadlocked at 21, but three straight costly errors put USMMA ahead 24-21, and a kill from Brittany Breland secured the 25-21 win
- A closely played third set had both sides knotted at 14, but six unanswered SJNY points put the home team ahead 20-14 and the Golden Eagles held off elimination taking the set 25-18
- After falling behind 7-0 in the fourth set, St. Joseph's inched back to within one, 24-23, down the stretch, but the Mariners held on for the 25-23 win
