The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's volleyball team came up just short in a five-set thriller at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday evening.

The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 match lead with 25-19, 25-16 wins in sets one and two

The Golden Eagles trailed 6-1 early in set three but came back to two the score at 8. The sides went on to exchange points and traded the lead, but knotted at 18, St. Joseph's claimed four straight points to pull away 22-18 and went on to take the set 25-20

Set four saw USMMA leading early again, SJLI chipped away and overtook the hosts at 7-6. They maintained a lead throughout the frame for a 25-19 win pushing the match to a decisive fifth-set

The Golden Eagles held the largest lead of the set at 10-5, but the Mariners came back to tie it up at 13. The teams traded points and back-to-back USMMA kills clinched the 16-14 set win and ultimately the match 3-2
