Women's Soccer Defeat Brooklyn College 2-0

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team won its second-straight game and defeated Brooklyn College 2-0 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at Danzi Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-3-1 on the year and Brooklyn slides to 0-3.

The Golden Eagles controlled possession for the majority of the first half, and held a steep advantage in shots. They had the opportunity to strike first in the 13th minute when a corner was awarded to sophomore Kristin Carroll, who sent the ball into the box. Senior Jaclyn Hughes took a shot but it was blocked by the Bulldogs defense. The two teams battled to net the first goal, but the half concluded with the sides locked in a 0-0 stalemate.

At the end of the first half St. Joseph's had the advantage in shots with eight and the Bulldogs were held to one shot.

St. Joseph's continued to dominate possession and controlled the tempo of the game in the second half. The Golden Eagles started to create more opportunities to score in the 66th minute as a corner was a taken by Jessica Cordano. Hughes jumped for the header, and there was a scramble in the box that led to handball. SJC was awarded the penalty, and senior Joann Murino successfully converted to net the first goal of the contest.

St. Joseph's doubled its lead in the 81st minute when senior Chelsea Bellini went one on one with the keeper. After back-to-back shots by Bellini, she pounced on the rebounded ball and shot it into the empty net to take the 2-0 led. The Golden Eagles continued to pressure the Brooklyn defense as time expired to earn the 2-0 victory.

SJC out-shot the Bulldogs 20-3, and held the advantage in corners with nine.

The Golden Eagles will resume conference play as they travel to take on Mt. Saint Mary on Saturday September 19 at 3:30 PM.
