Newburgh, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team failed to erase a first-quarter deficit in an 11-7 defeat at Mount St. Mary College on Friday evening.
The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 5-4 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. The Knights improve to 8-4 (3-0 Skyline) on the year.
A trio of first-quarter tallies put the guests behind early, and even though SJC found the back of the net twice in the second quarter, it was a four-goal deficit (6-2) at the break.
A three-goal third quarter--marks courtesy of Chris Nielsen, Matt Prokesch and Jack Murray--proved futile as St. Joseph's was again outscored in the period, this time 4-3.
Down 10-5 at the start of the fourth, SJC found a pair of tallies off the sticks of Michael Benasutti and Matthew Fernandez but it wouldn't be enough. At the final whistle, it was an 11-7 conference defeat for the Golden Eagles.
Leading an SJC offense that generated 32 shots was Casey Hickey, who was credited with two goals and an assist. Nielsen and Murray contributed a goal and an assist each, and Christian Prate scooped up a team-high four ground balls.
Keeper Adam Sivon (5-4) made 12 saves on 23 shots.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, April 13 when they visit Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime for a 7:00 pm contest.
