USMMA Edges Men’s Lacrosse on Tuesday
Kings Point, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team was edged, 9-6, by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference contest played in Kings Point, NY on Tuesday evening.
The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 1-3 overall on the year and in Skyline play as the Mariners improve to 2-0.
St. Joseph's offense was powered by sophomore Jack Gilbride, who tallied three goals on seven shots and added a helper and two ground balls.
Junior Tim McCann scored twice and scooped up a pair of ground balls, and junior Matt Trautman was credited with two assists. Senior Vincent Raccuglia caused two turnovers and had a team-best five ground balls.
Goalie Andrew Brust (1-3) made 15 saves in a contest that saw his side outshot 43-23.
The hosts went ahead 39 seconds into the game but McCann answered less than three minutes later when he converted on a feed from Gilbride (1-1).
Down 2-1 later in the first, McCann got his second (2-2) in a man-up situation, but a Mariner tally with just 34 seconds remaining in the quarter put the hosts up one goal (3-2) heading into the second quarter.
USMMA would find two more goals in the second quarter and took a 5-2 lead into halftime. Gibride notched two goals in the third quarter but was outscored by the Mariners, who put four past Brust in the period (9-4).
Gilbride and Lopez, with nine seconds remaining, capped off the scoring in the fourth (9-6).
USMMA held statistical advantages in faceoffs won (13-6) and ground balls (38-26). SJC was credited with 16 clears to the hosts' 14.
