Softball Splits Doubleheader with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College softball team (18-18) celebrated the second part of their Senior Day with a doubleheader split with St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn (17-10). It was a day of pitching duels with both games decided by scores of 1-0.

The Lady Eagles started the day with sophomore Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y. / Middle Country) on the mound to face Alyson Chiaramonte of the Bears. The only run came in the top of the second from a solo homerun by Caitlyn Kakavas off Martinez. The Eagles weren't able to get many hits scattering three over seven innings. Second baseman Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East) tripled in the fourth with one out, but two groundouts left her stranded. St. Joseph's was able to get a runner on third in the fifth and sixth, but weren't able to produce runs off either opportunity leading to the 1-0 loss.

The second game featured the pitching matchup of De Carmine and Chiaramonte, with the Eagles gaining the upper hand in the game. The Golden Eagles jumped ahead early in the bottom of the first starting with a string of singles by Vienna Costanzo (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), Julia De Carmine, and Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage). Costanzo scored off a groundout by Gina Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y. /Massapequa).

The one run was all De Carmine needed to secure her ninth win on the season. She pitched a complete game, seven-inning shutout, allowing only four hits, one walk, and struck out four. She finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate, including two triples.

The next games for St. Joseph's Golden Eagles are Friday night starting at 6:00 p.m. against the College of Staten Island (12-16).
