Tennis Soars Past NYU-Poly for First Skyline Win

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a, 9-0, win over conference opponent NYU-Polytechnic (0-5, Skyline 0-2). The victory marked the first conference win for the Lady Eagles and the sixth consecutive against the Fighting Blue Jays.

Leading the way for St. Joseph's was junior captain Nancy Marroquin (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford). Marroquin and junior Katie Soeder (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) opened the match with an 8-0 doubles victory.  Marroquin later defeated NYU-Poly's top player, Sophia Eliseev, in straight sets 6-1,6-0.

Senior Katelyn Dorsey (Farmingville, N.Y./ Sachem) and sophomore Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) each shutout their opponents (6-0, 6-0) in fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Freshman Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) contributed with wins in sixth singles (6-0,6-1) and third doubles (8-0) with Merker.

Next up for St. Joseph's is first place, and preseason favorite, Mount Saint Mary (5-0, Skyline 1-0). The Golden Eagles are looking for revenge after being defeated by the Knights in the Skyline Finals last season. The match is scheduled for Saturday September 29, at 12:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Outdoor Athletic Complex.
