Heavenly Win for SJC Tennis Over New Rochelle Blue Angels

New Rochelle, N.Y. - It was another blowout win for the Golden Eagles' women's tennis team yesterday, as St. Joseph's College (4-1) defeated the College of New Rochelle (0-2)by a score of 9-0.

The women's team, led by head coach Glenn Nathan, pitched their second shutout of the season; the last one coming on September 11 against York College.  For such a relatively young team, consisting of three freshmen and two sophomores, they have been running through their opponents with ease.

Freshman Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) and junior Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) teamed up for the first doubles win of the day.  Following, the sophomore pair of Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and Erika Hasselberg (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd), and freshman Kerri Cetin (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and senior Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) continued their doubles matches dominance.

As for the singles, the shutout only continued, as the New Rochelle Blue Angels could not grab a lead.  Granted, this was only the College of New Rochelle's second match of the season, but the Golden Eagles looked the part of a powerhouse yesterday in their non-conference match.

The women's tennis team looks to better their record this week, as they square off with Farmingdale State College for a Skyline Conference match.  The Golden Eagles are 2-0 in Skyline Conference matches, but Farmingdale State is fielding their two Skyline Players of the Week in senior Jessica Sickles and sophomore Priscilla Signore.

For Golden Eagle fans able to make the short trip, the game is this Thursday, September 25 at Farmingdale State.   The start time of this important matchup is 4:00 p.m.
