Eagles Trump Bears in SJC Volleyball Showdown

Brooklyn, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's-LI Golden Eagles (6-6) took down the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears (1-1) 3-1 on Wednesday night. The Lady Eagles took the first two games before splitting the final two on their way to victory.

The Eagles got out to a fast start in the first game opening up, 10-3. Long Island led 22-11 before Brooklyn went on a 6-2 run. However, the Golden Eagles finished them off with an ace by Brittany Boccio (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport South Manor).

In the second game, the Eagles were soaring again. They got out to a 16-6 advantage to begin the game, but the Bears were not ready to hibernate. For the second straight game, the Lady Eagles struggled to score their 23rd point. The Golden Bears went on a 7-2 run to bring themselves within five before a ball handling error gave the Eagles the win.

SJC Brooklyn refused to be shutout in front of their home crowd as they jumped out to an early lead in game three and never looked back as they forced a fourth game. After a close start to game four, the Lady Eagles pulled away, dominating in game four. They won the match with a 25-10 victory.

Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./Centereach) led the offense with ten kills. Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) added twenty-five assists and Melissa Garibaldi (Seaford, N.Y./Island Trees) had nine digs.

The Golden Eagles play their next six games at home including their first Skyline Conference match on September 28th vs. Polytechnic.
