Men’s Lacrosse Drops Tight 9-8 Decision at Salve Regina

Newport, RI| Despite leading by two goals at the start of the fourth quarter, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team was defeated, 9-8, by Salve Regina in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 1-3 overall on the year as the Seahawks improve to 5-1.

The SJC offense was powered by sophomore Anthony Passarella, who scored three goals and added two assists. Senior Chris Nielsen and sophomore Tim McCann both scored twice in the contest.

Senior Declan Canevari won nine of 20 faceoffs and led SJC with four ground balls. Sophomore Andrew Brust (1-2) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles and made 11 saves on 20 shots.

St. Joseph's was the better team through the first three quarters, leading 3-2 at the end of the first, 6-4 at halftime, and 8-6 at the end of the third. Nielsen's tally with 10 seconds to play in the third ensured the Golden Eagles entered the fourth with a two-goal lead.

Salve scored 1:41 into the final period to cut the deficit to one goal (8-7) and went on to tie the game at eight nearly 10 minutes later. With 1:27 to play in regulation, Salve's Pat Leary netter the game-winner.

St. Joseph's was outshot 40-28 in the contest after allowing 18 shots in the fourth quarter. Salve also held statistical edges in total ground balls (24-12) and faceoffs won (11-9).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 18 when they host Oswego at Danzi Stadium for a non-conference contest at 5:30 pm.
