Men’s Soccer Edged by Purchase on Saturday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team surrendered an early 1-0 lead in a 3-2 home defeat to Skyline Conference rival SUNY Purchase at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip to 1-5-0 overall on the year and 1-1-0 in Skyline play as the Panthers improve to 3-2-0 (2-0-0 Skyline).

The hosts took the lead in the second minute when a cross from junior Vincent Raccuglia deflected off a Purchase defender and found the back of the net as an own-goal tally.

Purchase knotted the score up at one in the 19th minute when Juan Arboleda beat SJC keeper Tyler Flaherty from outside the box with a rising shot to the top corner.

The teams would enter the break deadlocked at one but the guests took their first lead of the afternoon in the 52nd minute when Brandon Balcaceres finished off a left-sided cross in the box. A Jasper Ehrhardt marker in the 58th minute extended Purchase's lead to two (3-1).

The Golden Eagles would cut the deficit to one goal in the 67th minute when an attempted Purchase clearance was blocked by junior Dylan True and deflected into the Panthers' goal.

SJC was outshot by a 16-6 margain in the contest and won four corners to Purchase's eight. Flaherty made six saves on nine shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, September 25 when they host SUNY Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference contest at Danzi Stadium at 4:00 pm.
