Garrett Claims 100th Win in Baseball's Split with NJCU

Patchogue, NY| Head Coach Rich Garrett recorded his 100th win Tuesday evening when the St. Joseph's College baseball team earned an 8-6 victory in game one of a non-conference matchup against the New Jersey City University. The Golden Eagles came up short in game two, 5-3.

The Golden Eagles move to 13-14 on the season and the Gothic Knights now sit at 16-11.

SJCLI 8, NJCU 6

Junior Tyler Costa led off the bottom of the first with bunt base hit and came into score on sophomore Tyler Sanderson's double to the left-center gap. After a Paul Britt's base hit to center put runners on second and third, Michael Ferrufino grounded out the right side plating Sanderson and a defensive miscue allowed Britt to score for a 3-0 SJC lead.

An RBI single from Dan Campanelli in the bottom of the third pushed the lead to 4-0. The Gothic Knights got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 7-1.

NJCU began to chip away at the SJC lead scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, 7-4. Britt's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth drove home Sanderson pushing the lead back up to four, 8-4, but a two-run top half of the sixth had the Gothic Knights back within two, 8-6.

SJC's Thomas Crispyn pitched around a two-out walk to pick up his first save of the season and securing the 6-8 win.

Sanderson led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Anthony Caminiti earned the win allowing just one hit with two Ks.

SJCLI 3, NJCU 5

After trailing 5-0 through four and a half innings, the Golden Eagles got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Reda reached on an error to start the inning and a couple batters later Matthew Burnett worked a two-out walk. Louis Fontinha came up and scorched a singled up the middle bringing in Reda and a mishandled throw in from the outfield allowed Burnett to score.

The Golden Eagles inched closer in the bottom of the sixth when Anthony Raucci led off the inning with a pinch-hit triple. Back-to-back pinch-hit singles from Sanderson and Lou Doria drove in Raucci cutting the deficit to 5-3. An NJCU pitching change put Anthony Carfora on the mound and he got the Gothic Knights out of the inning without any further damage.

After retiring the Gothic Knights in order in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles had runners on first and second with two out, but Carfora got Sanderson swinging for the final out to claim the 5-3.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they host the College of New Rochelle on Thursday, April 19. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm.
