W. Basketball Pummeled by FDU-Florham in 2013-14 Season Tipoff

New York, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles (0-1) were outmatched from the start against the Devils of FDU-Florham (1-0) in the first game of the Hunter College Tournament. The Eagles could not handle the heat as the Devils were victorious, 113-55.

St. Joseph's put themselves in a hole early, down 6-0. Danielle Hamlin (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) hit a three pointer to make it 6-3. That would be the Eagles only basket in the first eleven minutes of play. The fifteen turnovers and no second chance efforts in that time span, allowed the Devils to widen the gap to 28-3. Erika Ellwanger (Oakdale, N.Y/Connetquot) and Christina Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) hit back-to-back three pointers to make it 28-9. The Eagles were able to limit the turnovers but could not score as FDU-Florham went on a 21-to-2 run. St. Joseph's saw some progress offensively towards the end of the first half as they doubled their first half point total in the final three minutes of play but still trailed at the half, 55-21.

The Eagles responded in the second half, drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. They continued to limit the turnovers and started to drain shots, led by Christina Cohen. The Devils led by as many as 58. The Eagles cut the lead down to 30, midway through the second half but the Eagles went ice cold for the remainder of the game. After leading 80-50, the Devils scored 23 unanswered points, finishing the game on a 43-5 run.

The bright spot for the Eagles came from the Cohen sisters who combined for 28 points, half of SJC's total. Laura Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) had the best all-around game with 16 points, three assists, five rebounds and a steal in 40 minutes.
