Lady Eagles Ground Poly Blue Jays in OT Special

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Polytechnic Blue Jays (2-15, SKY 0-7) came out of the gate swinging Thursday night but it was the Lady Golden Eagles (2-15, SKY 2-5) who remained standing at the end of their 61-57 overtime victory on the road.

After closely tailing the home team for the first thirty minutes of regulation play, SJC made their move; a jumper from Danielle Hamlin (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) gave the Eagles their first lead of the game at 43-42. With less than two minutes to play, a Blue Jay's made jump shot put the home team up 53-52 but the Golden Eagles still had a lot left in the tank.  Laura Cohen sunk a clutch three-point jumper with only seconds left on the clock, leaving the last possession to the home team. After a timeout and with only 11 seconds left in regulation, a made jumper by a Blue Jay tied the game at 55 and thrust the game into overtime.

In overtime, the game tied again at 57 but that was the end of the Blue Jay's offensive game.  With a jumper by Michelle Lupoli, (Massapequa, N.Y./ Massapequa), SJC regained the lead while Jackie Zizzo's (Bethpage, N.Y./ Bethpage) jump shot with a little over a minute left cinched the well-deserved win for the Golden Eagles.

Hamlin led the Eagles' offensive efforts with 18 points in addition to her impressive 16 rebounds.  Laura Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) also brought her "A-game" with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.  Zizzo was lights out from the field with ten points while Christina Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) was a defensive force to be reckoned with, logging four rebounds and four steals in addition to her five assists and eight points. Katie McGarrel (Selden, N.Y./ Newfield) ripped down nine rebounds and had two steals.

The Lady Golden Eagles will host Sage on Saturday for a 2 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
