Volleyball Soars Past NYU-Poly, 3-1

Patchogue, N.Y.—St. Joseph's Lady Eagles (10-3, 2-1 SKY) won their sixth consecutive game on Thursday as they defeated NYU-Polytechnic's Fighting Blue Jays (4-17, 1-1 SKY) 3-1 in a Skyline Conference match.

The Blue Jays' early lead in the first set proved to be their only lead of the game as the Eagles quickly bounced back serving ten consecutive unanswered points, bringing the score to 14-7.  NYU-Poly attempted to regain their momentum but their six kills were not enough to catch SJC who won the match 25-13.

SJC came out sluggish for the second set and trailed the Blue Jays for nearly the whole game.  Poly only came away with ten kills and two service aces in their 25-19 win however, garnering most of their points from Lady Eagle errors.

The third and fourth sets flew by as SJC found their groove again, maintaining the lead for the entire rest of the match.  The Lady Eagles pulled themselves together, committing only eleven errors in the final two games and taking both of the 25-15 and 25-14 victories with ease.

Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) had eleven kills and seven digs in the win, while Tiffany Willms (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) finished strong with eight kills and nine digs.  Captain Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./ Bethpage) had 34 assists, Ashley Larrea (Islip, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford) came away with a solid 14 digs and Melissa Garibaldi (Seaford, N.Y./ Island Trees) contributed with 13 digs.

The Lady Eagles will attempt to defend their six-game streak on Saturday in a Skyline Tri-Match in Newburgh, N.Y. where they will face both Mt. St. Mary and Purchase.
