Baseball Splits in Season Opener with CMSV

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team opened the 2021 season with a split against the College of Mt. St. Vincent at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles came from behind to take game one 5-2 before dropping game two 8-2. SJCLI sits at 1-1 (1-1 Skyline) as CMSV moves to 3-1 (3-1 Skyline).

Game One: SJCLI 5, CMSV 2

Mt. St. Vincent jumped to an early lead when Anthony Nocero sent a two-run home run to left in the top of the first.

The Golden Eagles answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when senior Tyler Sanderson (2-for-3, RBI) singled in sophomore Paul Gugliuzzo (2-for-3, 2 RBI) who lead off with a base hit up the middle. Sanderson came around to score on a sacrifice fly from junior Charles Rainone (0-for-2, RBI) knotting the game at 2.

Both pitchers settled in putting zeros up on the scoreboard until SJCLI's Gugliuzzo lead off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot over the right-field fence.

A CMSV defensive miscue would lead to two insurance runs for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the sixth before SJC starter Ryan Foran (1-0) stranded a pair of Dolphins in the top of the seventh to secure the 5-2 win.

Foran held the Dolphins to just two runs on five hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort.

CMSV's Andrew Geiger (0-1) suffered the loss allowing four runs on eight hits with five Ks.

Game Two: SJCLI 2, CMSV 8

The Dolphins struck early again in game two with three runs in the top of the first followed by a pair of runs in the second.

The visitors extended their lead, 7-0, with a two-run fifth before the Golden Eagles broke up the shut out when an infield single off the bat of graduate student Anthony Raucci (1-for-5, RBI) scored junior Justin Stromski (2-for-2, R).

SJC added a run in the sixth, but another Dolphin run in the ninth moved the game to its final 8-2.

Sanderson and Rainone finished with two hits apiece.

CMSV's Sean McHugh picked up the win allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings.

The Golden Eagles and the Dolphins faceoff in the series finale on Monday, March 22 at Gregg Alfano Field. Game time is slated for 3:00 pm.
