Women's Basketball Takes Down FDU, 79-63

Results:

The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's basketball team bounced back to take down FDU-Florham on day two of the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Classic 79-63 on Sunday afternoon.

Top performers:
  • Sophomore Megan Spina led all players with 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc

  • Graduate Casey Travers pitched in with 17 points, going 7-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three-point range

  • FDU's Neysa Aguilar led the Devils with 18 points and nine steals

  • Shannon Tighe recorded a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Devils

How it happened:
  • The Golden Eagles built a lead early in the first frame taking a 19-2 lead with 4:08 on the clock and closed out the quarter ahead 29-11

  • Both teams put up 11 points in the second quarter and the Golden Eagles went into the break leading 40-22

  • A three from FDU's Aguilar cut the Devils' deficit to 10, 43-33, at the 6:18 mark in the third quarter, but 15 unanswered points put SJLI ahead 58-35 with just over three minutes remaining in the frame

  • Entering the fourth quarter with a 67-41 advantage, SJLI's Felicia Barreiros dropped in a three giving the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the day, 72-43, with 7:34 remaining

  • A pair of FDU free throws would bring the Devils to within 13, 75-62, with just over two minutes on the clock, but the Golden Eagles came away with the 79-63 win

Notes:
  • St. Joseph's shot 44.6% from the field and 48.0% from three-point territory

  • FDU posted a 31.3% shooting percentage overall and 11.1% from beyond the arc

  • The Saints scored 20 points off turnovers compared to SJLI's 12, and held the advantage in points in the paint, 32-28
