Women’s Volleyball Posts 1-1 Record in Day 2 of Ramapo Invtl

Mahwah, NJ| The St. Joseph's (L.I.) women's volleyball team went 1-1 in the second day of the Ramapo Invitational on Saturday afternoon, defeating SUNY Potsdam 3-2 in the first game before falling to New Paltz 3-0 in the second game. With the split decision, the Golden Eagles now sit at 4-7 before entering Skyline Conference play tomorrow against Maritime and Yeshiva.

In the first match, the Golden Eagles held off a Potsdam side that pushed them to five sets. In the opening set, St. Joseph's rallied with the score tied at 15 to claim a 25-21 win before dropping the second set 25-22.

The third set was also tight, but after tying the score at 15, Potsdam stumbled and allowed the Golden Eagles to score five of the next six en route to a 25-19 win. Set four saw the teams tied on four different occasion, but it would be the Bears that eked out the narrow 25-22 win.

In the deciding set, the Golden Eagles scored the first point, but the Bears rallied for the next five. St. Joe's answered, winning the next six to reclaim the lead at 7-5. Potsdam scored the next point, but the Golden Eagles grabbed eight of the final 12 points and secured the 15-9 set and 3-2 match victory.

Potsdam had no answer for St. Joseph's attack, which generated a season-best 61 kills. Junior Kiersten Kissinger recorded a game- and career-best 21 kills, and senior Heather Ferchland's 19 kills was her highest total of the season. Junior Courtney Wickline also set a new career-high in assists (53).

Game two against New Paltz yielded drastically different results for the Golden Eagles, who were held to just 29 kills throughout the match. The Hawks scored the first nine points of the first set before claiming it by the score of 25-5.

St. Joseph's rallied in the second set, jumping out to a 9-6 lead, but surrendered eight of the next 11 points to fall behind 14-12. The Golden Eagles would recover, rallying for four-straight points with with the score tied 17-13 to tie the set at 17. Down 24-23, Ferchland recorded a kill to extend the set, but New Paltz scored the next two points to win the set 26-24.

In the third and final set, St. Joseph's fumbled a 18-13 lead, allowing the Hawks to score 12 of the final 15 points to win the set and the match.

Ferchland shared the match-lead in kills with 10, while freshman Jenna Beekman led the Golden Eagles in digs with 15. Wickline recorded 24 assists.

St. Joseph's finishes the tournament with a 1-3 record, having lost to Ithaca and Scranton on Friday evening.

In tomorrow's Skyline Conference opening tri-match, the Golden Eagles will face Yeshiva at 12:00 PM and Maritime at 2:00 PM. All matches will be played on the campus of Maritime. Follow live stats for both game here.
