Men’s Basketball Topped by Sarah Lawrence in Skyline Affair

Bronxville, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team suffered a 73-59 defeat to Skyline Conference rival Sarah Lawrence College at the Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday evening.

The Gryphons (3-3, 2-0 Skyline) hand the Golden Eagles their first conference defeat of the season (1-1) as SJC slides to 2-3 overall on the year.

Junior Frank Basile scored a game-high 18 points (6-for-11 FG) and a grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.

Senior Mike Harris went for 15 points (6-for-16 FG) and six rebounds, and freshman Matthew Hirdt shot 5-for-8 from the field (3-for-5 3FG) for 14 points off the bench.

Sarah Lawrence was paced by BJ Sanders, who scored a team-high 15 points, and Enike Aniya, who grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds.

SJC fell behind early but kept pace with the Gryphons and eventually took a 26-24 lead when Harris drained a three-pointer with 2:11 to play in the first half.

Sarah Lawrence countered with six of the half's final eight points and took a 30-28 lead into the break. A 13-4 run for the hosts inside the first five minutes of the second frame saw them go up 43-32, and SJC failed to recover, eventually succumbing to a 73-59 defeat.

Despite edging the Gryphons on the boards, 38-37, St. Joseph's was outshot from the field, 43.3% to 41.5%, and from three, 32.3% to 32.0%.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, December 1 when they visit SUNY Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference showdown at 2:00 pm.
