Men’s Basketball Tops Maritime in Skyline Affair

Throggs Neck, NY| Four players scored in double-digits as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team defeated SUNY Maritime, 82-67, in a Skyline Conference contest in Riesenberg Hall on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-12 on the year and 4-8 in Skyline Conference play as the Privateers slip to 2-11 (3-15 Skyline).

A balanced SJC offense was powered by junior Frank Basile, who shot 8-for-18 from the field and scored a team-high 24 points. The guard also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Freshman Matthew Hirdt posted career-high totals for points (18) and rebounds (12) for his first-career double-double. Senior Mike Harris and junior Brad Weiss also scored in double-digits with 13 points apice.

Maritime was paced by Brendan McGovern, who shot 9-for-19 from the field and scored a game-best 25 points.

The Golden Eagles were second best through most of the first half and trailed the hosts 22-17 with 7:24 left before the break, but a 21-8 run to end the half saw the guests ahead 38-30 at the end of the first period.

Similarly in the second half, Maritime came out hot and pulled back ahead, 53-48, with 9:29 to play in regulation. Harris converted on a layup with the next possession and kick-started a 23-14 run for the guests that catapulted them to an 82-67 victory.

SJC was the better shooting team, having shot 50.9% from the field while holding the Privateers to a 35.8% field goal percentage. St. Joseph's also held advantages in total rebounds (45-28), points in the paint (36-22) and fastbreak points (16-0).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, January 27 when they host Yeshiva University inside the Danzi Center for a Skyline Conference contest at 1:00 pm.
