The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Russel Sage College 17-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Top performers:

Junior Michael Carere recorded a team-high two goals on seven shots while collecting 13 groundballs, causing one turnover, and finished 7-12 on faceoffs

Senior Tim Bruno collected a game-high 14 groundballs to go along with one goal, one assist and converting 11-13 faceoffs

Sophomore Dylan Mann scored one goal on one shot and added two groundballs

Junior Connor Van Dusen totaled 16 saves on the day and tallied two groundballs

Bailey Martin scored nine goals for the Gators, and also provided two assists and one groundball

Nate Kettle of Sage recorded two goals, two assists, and three ground balls
How it happened:

The game started in favor of Sage as they started the opening quarter by scoring the first four goals of the game to build a 4-0 advantage

Sage continued their goal-scoring in the second quarter as they again put together four goals increasing their lead to 8-0 at halftime
-
St. Joseph's would start the second half strong as they put together the first two goals of the half with Bruno and Mann finding the back of the net
-
The gators responded with three straight goals of their own to end the third quarter with a lead of 11-2 heading into the fourth

Carere would help the Golden Eagles by scoring two goals in the final quarter but it would be hindered by the Gator's six goals in the quarter to secure the victory

The Golden Eagles collected 40 groundballs while the Gators collected 49

SJLI was 18-25 on faceoffs while Sage was just 7-25
