Lady Eagles Sweep Dolphins in Home Opener

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College softball team (7-3, Skyline 2-0) swept their Skyline Conference opening series against the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent (1-7, Skyline 0-4).

In the first game of the series, the Eagles were the first to score in the bottom of the second. Leftfielder Gina Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) led off the half-inning with a triple to right center. After a strikeout, shortstop Samantha Carcano (Centereach, N.Y. / Newfield) hit a bunt single and then stole second on the next at-bat. Freshman catcher Case Thomas (Bellmore, N.Y. / Mepham) walked to load the bases for the third baseman Gianna Gulli (Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai). Gulli delivered and hit a grand slam, putting the Lady Eagles up 4-0. A wild pitch later in the inning scored the designated hitter Lindsey Corriss (Sayville, N.Y. / St. Anthony's). The Lady Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to cruise to the 7-2 win.

Gulli led St. Joseph's by going 1-for-3 with four RBI'S. Moscatelli had two hits and drove in one run. Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y. / Middle Village) pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs, one walk, while striking out 10 to earn her third win of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the hot hitting for St. Joseph's continued. The Eagles struck early in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Tara Bernocco (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) led off the bottom of the inning with walk. A bunt single by Corriss put two on with no-out. Moscatelli hit another triple to right center and scored on an error by the second basemen. Centerfielder Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) was then hit-by-pitch and later scored on a RBI single by designated hitter Mallory McClafferty (Bellport, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist).

St. Joseph's added another run in the bottom of the second from a two-out RBI single to left by Megan Leun (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) to extend the lead to 5-0. The Dolphins plated two in the top of the third; the Lady Eagles answered back with one run in the bottom of the fourth, then four in the fifth to run-rule Mt. St. Vincent and seal the win.

Moscatelli had a big game, going 3-for-4 with four RBI's, three runs, and two triples. Mallory McClafferty was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and one triple. Corriss scored three runs off two hits. Julia DeCarmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East) pitched five innings, allowing two runs and struck out five to earn her third win of the season.
