Gators Chomp Lady Eagles Twice in Skyline Games

Troy, N.Y. – The Gators of the Sage Colleges (14-13, Skyline 6-4) completed a doubleheader sweep of the St. Joseph's College softball team (17-13, Skyline 7-3) to knock them out of their perch atop the Skyline Conference. The Gators won 7-3 and 1-0 to drop the Lady Eagles from first to third in the conference standings.

St. Joseph's scored to open the game up in the top of the first off a two-out double by sophomore centerfielder Julianne Teirney (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage). Sage answered back with a two-RBI single off St. Joseph's starter Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East).

The Lady Eagles managed to tie the game up in the top of the fourth when sophomore third baseman Gianna Gulli (Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai) hit into a fielder's choice, plating the pinch runner, freshman Lindsey Corriss (Sayville, N.Y. / St. Anthony's).

Sage came right back in the bottom of the inning scoring two more runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Gators added three more in the bottom of the fifth, to hold a commanding 7-2 lead with two innings to go.  St. Joseph's only managed one more run in the top of the sixth, from a two-out RBI triple by senior leftfielder Gina Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa).

De Carmine was roughed up for six earned runs off eleven hits over six innings, in route to her second loss of the season.  Moscatelli finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and RBI. Freshman second baseman Megan Leun (Hauppague, N.Y. / Hauppague) went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

The second game featured a pitching duel with junior Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y. / Middle Country) in the circle for St. Joseph's.  Martinez pitched a strong game allowing only one run off 10 hits, while striking out five over six innings of work.

The Eagle's bats couldn't solve Sage starter Kelsey Newberg as she allowed only one hit and struck out seven in her seven inning shutout.

Next up for St. Joseph's is a non-conference game against the Bearcats of Baruch (9-9) on Tuesday April 16th at 5:00 p.m. at the SJC Outdoor Complex.
