Women's Swimming Splashes Down on SJC-Brooklyn for Win

Patchogue, N.Y.-  The St. Joseph's College women's swim team (5-3) beat sister school-St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (1-1), 131- 66, with the help of sophomore Gabrielle Zollo (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip), who had three first place finishes on Saturday afternoon in the Danzi Center natatorium.

SJC-Long Island began the meet with a slow start losing in the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, 12-4, however, the Golden Eagles recovered impressively winning the following nine out of 10 events.

Lorraine Diehl (Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Sachem North) and Lorena Waters (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) teamed up in the 1000 freestyle to win the second event of the afternoon; Diehl came in first place posting a time of 13:44.19, while Waters followed with a 16:44.16.

Zollo's first place finishes came in the 50 (28.08) and 100-yard (1:00.87) freestyle along with being a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:54.73).

Melissa Nocco (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem North), Kimberly Mazza (Bohemia, N.Y. / Connetquot) and Jenna Birkmire (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) added first place finishes in the Golden Eagle victory.

Nocco notched a win in the 200-yard freestyle tallying a final time of 2:18.79.  Mazza finished first in the 200-yard IM (2:38.91) and the-500 yard freestyle (6:19.50). Birkmire won the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.30) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.51).

St. Joseph's College-Long Island's next meet will be held on January 14 as the ladies play host to USMMA at 6:00 p.m.
