Men’s Soccer Edged by USMMA on Saturday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team took a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 4-6-0 on the year and 2-2-0 in Skyline play as the Mariners improve to 5-2-2 (1-1-1 Skyline).

USMMA's Joe Springer opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he pounced on a rebound in the box and scored his first goal of the season (1-0).

After trailing 1-0 at the break the Golden Eagles' leveled in the 55th minute via senior Justin Busto, who took junior Damian Duda's left-sided cross first-time and beat the keeper Matthew Milner (2-1).

Despite being seemingly destined for overtime, Springer tallied for the second time in the 82nd minute and fired USMMA to a narrow 2-1 victory.

SJC keeper Tyler Flaherty (4-6-0) made six saves in a match that saw his side outshot 24-7. Milner was credited with two saves.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, October 2 when they visit Skyline Conference rival SUNY Old Westbury for a 4:00 pm contest.
