Women’s Tennis Advances to Skyline Final With 5-2 Win Over Yeshiva

Edgewater, NJ|The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team advances to the Skyline Conference Finals for the third-straight season after defeating Yeshiva University, 5-2, in the conference semifinals early on Friday morning. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 10-3 on the season, while the Maccabees end their season with a 9-2 record.

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start as Kerri McMahon and Emily Portal took down the team of Tzipora Leiser and Anita Levy on number two court by the score of 8-1. The tandem of Amanda Post and Victoria Panicola defeated Shani Hava and Rebecca Packer, 8-6, to put SJC ahead 2-0. The Golden Eagles completed the doubles sweep over Yeshiva when Erika Hesselbirg and Nora Burnett defeated Lindsay Frucher and Adele Lerner 8-5.

Hava earned the first point for the Maccabees after dismissing Post in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Packer was able to pull Yeshiva within one, 3-2, winning the fourth court singles 6-3, 6-0.

McMahon put SJC one point away from victory with a crucial 6-3, 6-1 win over Lerner at the third court.

Freshman Nora Burnett sealed the victory for the Golden Eagles in a hard fought battle with Jenny Tepler, outlasting Tepler in the first set 7-5 and cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set.

The Golden Eagles advance to the championship will travel to take on Farmingdale State College on Sunday, Oct. 30th at 11:00 AM. The winner of the match will receive a bid to compete in the NCAA tournament.
