Track & Field Kicks Off 2011 Season at Bill Ward Invitational

South Huntington, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College track & field team opened the 2011-2012 campaign at St. John's University's 2nd Annual Bill Ward Invitational.
 
Women's Recap
Freshman Sophia Brice (Shirley, NY/Longwood) made her collegiate debut placing 2nd in the high jump with a height of 1.56m (5-01.25) setting the school record at SJC. Brice was the first Division III athlete in a Division I & II dominant field to place.

Also competing in the high jump was freshman Sarah Hansen (Holtsville, NY/ Sachem East) who leaped 1.49m (4-09.50).

Men's Recap
Senior Jon Heitner (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) competed in the mile and ran a personal best of 4:58.42.

Junior Jonathan Afanador (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) took 5th in the 800m breaking the school record with a time of 2:05.40.

Afanador was joined by classmate Max James (Fort Salonga, NY/Kings Park), senior Sean Meehan (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), and freshman Kevin Sanders (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) competing in the 1600-meter relay event, claiming 3rd place with a school record time of 3:33.68. They were the first Division III team to cross the finish line not too far behind Division I Stony Brook.

Notable Performances:
Michael Sanders- Shot Put- 9.93m (#2 Indoor All-Time)
Robert Johnson- Mile- 4:53.85 (2nd in Heat)

Both teams will be back in action on Friday, January 13, 2012 to compete in the Gotham Cup hosted by New York University.
