Yeshiva Trumps M. Basketball in First Skyline Game of Season

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College men's basketball team (1-4, SKY 0-1) was taken down in their first Skyline Conference matchup of the season by the Yeshiva Maccabees (3-2, SKY 1-0), 78-59, Wednesday night in the Danzi Center. SJC's sophomore forward Fernando Vasquez (Babylon, N.Y. / Babylon) had an explosive offensive night for the Golden Eagles scoring a game-high 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting, 4-for-5 in free throws, and a three-point field goal.

The Golden Eagles showed promise to start the game, scoring their first points off a steal from forward Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) who transitioned the ball for a successful fast break.

The game remained close between the two squads for the first five minutes of the game with the Maccabees having a slight 9-8 edge over the Eagles. Yeshiva would eventually pull away, going on a 27-10 run to finish the first half leading 36-18.

Yeshiva would build upon the lead for the remainder of night, shooting an effective 50.9% from the floor. The Maccabees largest lead of the night was 27 points over the Golden Eagles, who are still looking for their first home court win.

SJC had sporadic runs in the second half, cutting the 27-point deficit to 18 points with the help of Vasquez's strong offensive attack.

On the night, St. Joseph's out-rebounded the Maccabees, 42-36, while McCarthy led the all with nine boards.

The Golden Eagles will look to attain their first Skyline Conference victory of the season as they travel to Bronxville, N.Y. to take on the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons (1-3, SKY 0-0) next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
