Golden Eagles Ultimately Soar Above Vaughn Warriors at Home

Patchogue, N.Y.Sean McCarthy's (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) 21 points and first double-double of the season led the Golden Eagles (4-4) soaring past the Vaughn College Warriors (4-5), 67-56, Monday night at the Danzi Center.

For the majority of the first half, the score ran back-and-forth between the Golden Eagles and the Warriors resulting in four lead changes.  SJC sparked momentum when McCarthy hit a jump shot to tie the game up at 31-31 with a little over three minutes remaining in the period.

Following the jumper, St. Joseph's would get a crucial defensive rebound where they would turn the ball around as starting point guard Nick Gallina (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem North) dished a passed to guard Evan Mohammed (Bayside, N.Y. / Holy Cross) who converted a three-pointer bringing the lead to 34-31. McCarthy would go on to score five unanswered points to finish the half.

In the second period, the Golden Eagles strapped down on defense to not allow any further lead changes. Andy Laurent (Amityville, N.Y. / Amityville) came off the bench to supply SJC with 10 (eight in the second half) bench points that lifted the home team to an eventual double-digit victory.

McCarthy's totals for the night included 21 points, 11 boards, an assist and a steal, while Galina tallied nine points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Laurent added 10 points and six rebounds.

St. Joseph's College is currently on a three-game winning streak and will look to extend their good play against the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (5-4) this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Danzi Center.
