Golf Takes Second at M. St. Mary Invitational

Newburgh, N.Y. - The Golden Eagles men's golf team participated in the Mount Saint Mary College Fall Golf Invitational held at the Powelton Club (a par 70 course) and fared well against their competition.  Of the seven teams and 36 participants, the Golden Eagles finished second as a team and had three players place within the top 10.

Junior Robert Bray (Shoreham, N.Y., Shoreham-Wading River) led the team with a score of 76, narrowly missing the top score of 75 on the day.  Bray has led the team in two consecutive events, and three times this season.

Finishing behind the team-best performer, junior Zac Campanelli (Bayport, N.Y., Bayport-Blue Point) and senior Ken Ortiz (Centereach, N.Y., Centereach) shot a score of 78.  The two men placed within the top 10 of the invitational, tying for ninth on the day.

Rounding out the bottom for St. Joseph's, but placing within the top 20 were sophomore John Melandro (Shoreham, N.Y., Shoreham-Wading River) with a score of 82 and senior Sean Sanders (Shoreham, N.Y., Shoreham-Wading River) at 84.  Melandro finished the day in sole possession of 16th place, while Sanders finished tied for 19th.

The team ended the day with a team total of 314, 34 shots over par.  This was low enough for SJC to finish in second place as a whole, placing 13 strokes behind Farmingdale State College.  This marks the team's third second place finish of the year.  SUNY Cobleskill, Mount Saint Mary College, Purchase College, Sage College, and SUNY College at Old Westbury fell in order behind St. Joseph's star-studded team.

The Golden Eagles golf team heads to Bloomfield, N.J. this Friday to compete in the NYU/Manhattanville Fall Invitational at 1:00 p.m.  Bray and company look to run through the competition at Forest Hills Field Club, hoping to get their first, first place finish on the season.
