SJC Golf Takes Third at LI Intercollegiate Championship

Sayville, N.Y. - Weather conditions, as well as course conditions, certainly provided challenges to all at the Long Island Intercollegiate Championship hosted by St. Joseph's, but the Golden Eagles fought through to finish third over the two-day event.

Dowling College took the top spot posting two-day scores of 283 and 303 for 586 total.  Their #2 player Charlie Loy posted tournament record scores of 66 and 73 (139 total).

Day one of the competition was brutally cold, wet and dank.  Dealing with the elements and attempting to perform to one's best ability, proved challenging for all.

Day two proved equally as challenging with heavy early rains, followed by cold dense fog later in the round.

The Golden Eagles of St Joseph's College performed admirably in the two-day event, setting two records of its own.  They posted a new one-day team scoring record of 301, which helped the team post a new two-day team scoring record of 310–301, 611.

Junior Rob Bray played very well with scores of 80-79, 159.  Senior Ken Ortiz had a personal best score on day two with a 74, and a best two-day score of 78-74, 152.  Sophomore John Melandro posted his personal best two-day score as well with a 74-76, 150, while junior Zac Campanelli posted an equal total score of 150 with two rounds of 78-72.

These four St Joseph's College players placed in the top 15, while four of the five were in the top eight.

Freshman Vincent Garofalo continued his forward progress posting scores of 89-87, 176.

Sophomore transfer and new team member, Richard Kelly, competed in his first collegiate event and posted scores of 87-92 179.

Farmingdale State College placed second, posting scores of 316-289, 605 with senior Matt Pollock posting an outstanding 76-68, 144, to place second in individual honors.
