Second Half Surge Sees Men’s Lax Past Maritime

Written by Andrew Capitelli (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Patchogue, NY| Eight second-half goals saw the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team earn a 12-4 victory over Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime at home on Tuesday evening and sets up what could be a must-win match-up with Kean University on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles--who picked up their third-straight victory--move to 7-5 on the year with the win and 4-4 in conference play as the Privateers fall to 4-9 (2-6).

St. Joseph's offense was powered by senior Josh Shaw, who led all players with five goals and six points on the evening. Junior Casey Hickey (2 goals, 2 assists) and freshman Chris Nielsen (1 goal, 2 assists) would contribute four and three points, respectively.

Keeper Andrew Yoli was credited with 13 saves on 17 shots, and Declan Canevari won 12 of 17 faceoffs.

Nielsen opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the game, but after going goal-for-goal with the guests the two sides wrapped the first quarter tied at two.

Hickey and Shaw's second quarter tallies ensured SJC took a 4-3 lead into the break following Kevin Izzo's mark early in the period, but the Golden Eagles would explode for eight more goals in the second half--highlighted by a stretch of seven-straight goals from seven different goal scorers--to surge to a 12-4 victory.

SJC held advantages in nearly all statistical categories, including shots (43-30) and ground balls (40-19) in addition to dominating on faceoffs (14-5).

Should Kean lose to second-place Stockton University on Wednesday evening, the Golden Eagles  would have the chance to earn a Skyline Conference Championship berth on Saturday when they host the Cougars at 7:00 pm. Join us 20 minutes prior to the game as we honor our graduating seniors.
