Men’s Soccer and Sage Play to 0-0 Draw in Skyline Opener

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team and their Sage Colleges counterpart played to a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium in Patchogue, NY. The match was the first Skyline Conference action either team has seen this season. With the draw, the Golden Eagles sit at 1-5-1 (0-0-1 Skyline) and the Gators at 3-2-2 (0-0-1 Skyline).

A slow moving first half saw only six shots in total generated, with the hosts holding the 4-2 advantage. St. Joseph's best opportunity came in the 26th minute when senior Gaetano Innamorato tested Sage keeper TJ Zhener off a free kick from 25 yards out.

The Golden Eagles again outshot the Gators in the second half, this time 7-4, but Sage was dangerous, breaking from their own end on several occasions before being called back for offsides.

After regulation failed to yield a winner, the two sides entered overtime in search for a valuable conference victory, but it wasn't in the cards. St. Joseph's had two corner kicks in the final 30 seconds of the game but could not convert, ensuring a 0-0 draw.

The Golden Eagles edged the Gators in shots (13-8) and corners (7-4) and keeper Avery Gomez was forced into making just two saves.

Innamorato had a strong showing in midfield and did well to control the pace of the game. Central defenders Brian O'Sullivan and Cody Kull did well to shore up the backline and stifle the Sage attackers.

St. Joseph's is back in action on Wednesday, September 23 when they welcome Rutgers-Newark to Danzi Stadium for a non-conference showdown. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
