Cheeseman’s OT Winner Powers SJC Past Maritime

Throgg's Neck, NY| Dan Cheeseman's free kick goal in double overtime powered the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team to a crucial Skyline Conference victory over Maritime College in Throggs Neck, NY on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Golden Eagles (6-9-1) move into first place in the Skyline Conference standings with a 5-2-1 record, while the Privateers fall to 9-6-0 (3-4-0) and sit in seventh.

Maritime would outshoot St. Joseph's in the first half 6-2 and notch the frame's only tally in the 17th minute, when Kevin Ferreira banged home his second goal of the season off a broken play in the Golden Eagles' box. St. Joseph's would respond with two shots and a corner over the course of the next three minutes, but the Privateers fended off the surge and entered halftime up 1-0.

In a chippy second frame, which saw seven cards issued including one red per side, the guests would find an equalizer in the 60th minute courtesy of Enrique Tirado. A free kick taken by Brian O'Sullivan took a deflection, and Tirado took it straight out of the air with his head to score his second goal in the past four games.

Renato Chira-Farfan had an opportunity to bag the winner for Maritime in the 86th minute, but SJC keeper Avery Gomez came up with a big save. As a result, the two sides would head to overtime in search of a deciding goal.

After failing to register a shot in the first overtime period, the Golden Eagles would find the game-winner goal in the form of a 50-yard free kick attempt from Cheeseman that caught Maritime keeper Karl Weber off his line. For Cheeseman, it was his first-career goal at St. Joseph's.

In their fifth overtime match this season, the Golden Eagles were outshot 9-4 in regulation and 10-5 overall. Gomez was forced into making four saves on the afternoon, while Weber made just one.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, October 21 when they host William Paterson University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at Danzi Stadium. Live stats will be available here.
