New York, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team was handed a pair of non-conference losses at the hands of Hunter College (3-0) and Emmanuel College (3-1) in a tri-match hosted on the campus of Hunter on Saturday afternoon.
With the losses the Golden Eagles slide to 5-4 on the year as the Hawks improved to 8-2 and the Saints to 3-5.
Hunter 3, SJC 0
After dropping a tightly contested first set, 27-25, the Golden Eagles found themselves down 12-7 in the second and allowed the hosts to rally for five consecutive points en route to taking the set 25-16.
Maintaining momentum in the third, Hunter went up 16-12 and later strung together the game's final four points to down the Golden Eagles 25-1, earning the three-set sweep.
Leading the SJC attack was freshman Paul Curaro, who collected a team-best 11 kills in the match. Fellow freshmen Kyle Biggers and Matthew Amberge recorded 10 and five kills, respectively.
Junior Tyler Jones dished out a team-best 17 assists and was credited with two blocks.
Emmanuel 3, SJC 1
Seeking to reverse their fortunes in the afternoon's second match the Golden Eagles were barely edged out by the Saints in the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
In the third SJC jumped out a 12-8 lead but later fell behind 17-15. Four of the next five points when to St. Joseph's but Emmanuel stuck with them as the sides traded points playing to a 27-26 scoreline in favor of the Saints. Consecutive Emmanuel attack errors saw SJC go up 28-27 and a Curaro kill sealed the framel and forced a fourth set.
Poised to extend the match another period the Golden Eagles looked likely to take the fourth when they led 23-18 late, but the Saints mounted a quick-fire comeback and took the set 26-24 to earn the 3-1 match victory.
Biggers would lead the SJC attack with 10 digs on 21 total attacks, and Curaro contributed nine kills of his own.
Jones led St. Joseph's in both assists (32) and digs (13).
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 18 when they head to Arcadia University where they'll face Nazareth at 11:00 AM and Brooklyn at 1:00 PM. Live stats for the matches will be available here.
