New York, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team split a Skyline Conference tri-match on Sunday afternoon, topping host Yeshiva University 3-0 before dropping a 3-1 decision to the College of Mount St. Vincent.
The split sees the Golden Eagles move to 16-10 on the year (4-3 Skyline) as the Maccabees slip to 5-14 (2-6 Skyline) and the Dolphins improve to 14-10 (5-1 Skyline).
SJC 3, Yeshiva 0
Up 20-10 in the first set, the Golden Eagles captured the final five points of the frame to earn a 25-10 victory and carried momentum into the second, where they won by a 25-14 scoreline.
Ahead 24-13 and on the brink of victory in the third, SJC allowed Yeshiva to string together three-straight points (24-16), but a David Slager kill clinched the sweep for the guests.
Freshmen Will Flohr and Matthew Amberge were credited with a game-high eight kills, and fellow classmen Paul Curaro and Kyle Biggers went for seven apiece.
Junior Tyler Jones' 34 assists were a game-best, and freshman Danny McNamara collected a team-high nine digs.
CMSV 3, SJC 1
St. Joseph's used a late first-set 6-1 run to earn a 25-19 victory in the opening frame but failed to capitalize on an opportunity to take a 2-0 run when they were edged 28-26 in the second.
After dropping the third 25-21, SJC fell behind 18-14 in the fourth but knotted the score up at 19 following a quick 5-1 run. A Dolphins' service error later in the set saw their lead cut to one (23-22) but a Jordan Steiger kill and Flohr attack error enabled them to hold off St. Joseph's for the 25-22 set and 3-1 match victories.
Amberge and CMSV's Tyler Cucullu both went for a game-best 18 kills in a match that saw SJC collect 51 total kills in comparison Vincent's 46.
Jones (42) and McNamara (24) posted game-high totals in assists and digs, respectively.
The Golden Eagles wrap up their regular season schedule on Sunday, April 9 when they host St. Joseph's (Brkln) and Sarah Lawrence for a Skyline Conference tri-match at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, respectively. Live stats for both matches will be available here.
