Women’s Volleyball Loses 5-Set Thriller to USMMA

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday night in a non-conference match played inside the Danzi Center. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 10-12 on the season, while USMMA improves to 13-9.

After falling behind 7-2 early in the first set, St. Joseph's would cut the gap to three points at 11-8 before scoring six of the next seven points to pull ahead 14-12. USMMA would recapture the lead and establish a 19-16 edge, but four straight kills by senior Heather Ferchland inched the hosts back in front 20-19. After fending off a mini-surge by USMMA, the Golden Eagles would win the set 25-22 following a kill from sophomore Claire Urizzo.

Over the course of the second frame, the score was tied on eight separate occasions, and it inevitably required extra time. After going down 24-22, the Golden Eagles tied the game at 24 with kills from Ferchland and junior Courtney Bocchieri. Ferchland would tie the match again at 25, but USMMA tallied the final two points to win the set 27-25 and tie the match at one.

Merchant Marine got the better of the Golden Eagles in the third set, cruising to a 25-19 victory, but they were only to be matched by St. Joseph's, who staved off defeat in the fourth set with a 25-20 win.

With the match for the taking in the fifth set, the sides played to a 4-4 tie early, although it was Merchant Marine who collected the next seven points and 11 of the final 13 to grab the deciding set.

Despite the loss, Ferchland (23) and Bocchieri (14) recorded season-highs in kills on the evening. Freshman Jenna Beekman was credited with a game-best 26 digs in the match; her highest total since collecting 31 against Potsdam on September 19. Junior Courtney Wickline's 50 assists we're also a game-high.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they travel to Sarah Lawrence to participate in a Skyline Conference tri-match. St. Joseph's will play Old Westbury at 1:00 PM and Sarah Lawrence at 3:00 PM.
