Eagles Sweep Doubleheader From Yeshiva

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College baseball team (6-8, Skyline 2-0) swept their doubleheader with the Maccabees of Yeshiva (1-14, Skyline 1-7), by scores of 11-1 in the first game and 17-1 in the second.  It was their first Skyline Conference action of the season

The first game was a won with a strong all-around effort by the Eagles as nine different players had a hit.  Senior designated hitter Charles Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) was a menace on the base paths with three steals while reaching base safely four times. Freshman first baseman Thomas Rubinstein (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) added two hits and two walks.

A four-run fifth would give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead, which was all starter Joe Polite needed (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North). The junior pitched seven strong innings allowing only one earned run off of five hits and struck out five as they cruised to the 11-1 victory.

In the second game, senior second-baseman Dennis Nover (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) led the way going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs.  He finished the day with five hits, four runs scored, and two stolen bases.  Junior centerfielder Brian Hannigan (West Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) went 1-for-3 with three RBIs off a double down the right field line in the bottom of the first. Freshman shortstop Anthony Andreani (Whitestone, N.Y./Holy Cross) had one of his best games of his young career going 2-for-4 with four RBis.

St. Joseph's jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first scoring four runs, with three-coming from Hannigan's RBI double. They added two more in third, and then exploded in the fifth by scoring 11 runs. The Eagles patience showed at plate with seven of their 11 walks coming in the fifth.

Senior Joe Reinhardt (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a strong outing going five innings, striking out six, and allowing only one run off one hit. Matthew Glotzer (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and Seth Pileggi (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown Christian) finished the game throwing a perfect inning apiece to seal the Eagles 17-2 win.

The next matchup for the team is a doubleheader at SUNY Maritime (8-6, Skyline 1-1) on Saturday, March 24 at 11:00 am. St. Joseph's swept the doubleheader last year against the Privateers with victories of 12-4 and 16-3.
