Baseball Grabs #3 Seed in Skyline Tourn. After Losses at Farmingdale

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College baseball team (19-18, Skyline 12-4) reached the Skyline Conference playoffs, finishing the regular season in third place. The Eagles lost both games on Saturday to the Rams of Farmingdale State (24-9, Skyline 15-1), who finished in first place and will receive a first-round bye in the tournament.

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitching duel of aces with St. Joseph's sending senior Jason Dierkes (Mount Sinai, N.Y. /Mount Sinai) to the mound to face Chris Phelan of the Rams. Dierkes pitched another eight-inning complete game allowing four runs, with all four coming in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles were only able to tack on two runs in the top of the fifth off an error by Phelan, but Farmingdale held on for the 4-2 victory.

Rich Pecoraro (Hampton Bays, N.Y. / Hampton Bays) and Charles Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y. / Riverhead) both went 2-for-4 in the game with Zilnicki scoring one of the two runs for St. Joseph's.

In the second game both teams got out to fast starts. The Eagles scored one run in the top of the first off a single by designated hitter Prateek Thaman (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppague). The Rams answered back with a run in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second, making it a short day for starter Mike Bazoge (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford). Sophomore Jonathan Beekman would finish the game pitching an effective 4.2 innings allowing only one earned run.

St. Joseph's answered back with three runs in the top of the third from RBI singles by Seth Pileggi (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown Christian) and Charles Zilnicki, followed by a sacrifice fly by third baseman James Carey (Patchogue, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist). Farmingdale and St. Joseph's each added one more run with the Rams' coming in the bottom of the third and the Eagles' in the top of the fourth. The Rams blanked the Eagles in the final three innings to hold onto the 6-5 lead.

The sweep dropped the Eagles to third place and make them the host of a single elimination game against #6 seed SUNY Maritime Privateers (17-15, Skyline 6-10) on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

The next game will be Senior Night for St. Joseph's as they face the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (19-12) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
