Lady Eagles Split with Knights on Senior Day

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's softball team (21-17, Skyline 9-5) split its doubleheader with the Knights of Mount Saint Mary (15-15, 6-6) with a loss in the first game, 3-1, and a run-rule victory in the second, 11-3.

Before the game, the Lady Eagles celebrated their senior day by honoring their two graduating seniors - outfielder Gina Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) and pitcher/infielder Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East).

Both teams struggled to score runs in the first game. Mt. St. Mary put up solo runs in the second, third, and sixth innings. St. Joseph's lone run came in the bottom of the second from an RBI single to center by Moscatelli. Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y. / Middle Country) got the start for St. Joseph's and had a strong performance. She gave up two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out eight. She lost her tenth game of the season despite having a 2.78 earned run average on the season.

The Lady Eagles' bats woke up in the second game behind starter Julia De Carmine.  SJC jumped out in front in the bottom of the sisecond with six runs.  First baseman Mallory McClafferty (Bellport, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) led off the inning with a single to center and scored on De Carmine's double down the right field line. De Carmine came across on a single to right by the designated player Nicole Reda (Saint James, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy). An error by the shortstop allowed Reda to score. Moscatelli hit a sacrifice fly to right field bringing home second baseman Megan Leun (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge). Shortstop Samantha Carcano (Centereach, N.Y. / Newfield) hit a two-RBI triple to cap the inning with SJC up 6-0.

The Eagles plated one more run in the fourth, then four in the sixth to seal the 11-3 win. De Carmine pitched six effective innings allowing just three runs on seven hits to earn her ninth win of the season. Nicole Reda finished the game 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. DeCarmine, Leun, and third baseman Gianna Gulli (Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai) each recorded two hits.  Carcano and Moscatelli each drove in two runs.

St. Joseph's next game will be during the Skyline Conference Championship on Friday April 26 at Purchase College. The Golden Eagles are the No. 4 seed and will be taking on No. 1 NYU-Polytechnic (24-9, Skyline 12-2). The Eagles defeated the Jays earlier in the season, 6-1 and 10-2.   The tournament is played under a double-elimination format and the winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
