Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 15-8 Win Over CMSV

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team played to a 15-8 season-opening win over the College of Mt. St. Vincent at Danzi Stadium on Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles start the season at 1-0 as the Dolphins slide to 0-1.

Melissa Newman paced SJC with six points on two goals and four assists. The sophomore also caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball.

Senior Tori Staker and freshman Alexa Cordingly both recorded five points apiece. Staker finished with four goals and an assist with eight draw controls and a team-best five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Cordingly tallied five goals in her St. Joseph's debut with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Freshman Sabrina Simonetti provided two goals with four draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Junior Jillian Hummel picked up her first win between the pipes with 11 saves.

The Dolphins finished with a slight advantage in shots, 29-28, ground balls, 19-17, and forced SJC into 23 turnovers in the game. The Golden Eagles won 14 draws while holding CMSV to just 4 free position goals out of 14 attempts.

Cordingly scored SJC's first goal of the season 1:38 into the game to tie the game at 1. Newman followed suit with her first goal to give the Golden Eagles its first lead of the day, 2-1, but the Dolphins answered with three unanswered scored to jump ahead 4-2.

A four-goal spurt from the Golden Eagles put the home team back on top, 6-4, with just over eight minutes on the clock. Both sides scored one more time before time ran out sending SJC into the break leading 7-5.

The Dolphins outscored SJC 3-2 in the first half of the second frame, but the Golden Eagles held the Dolphins scoreless through the latter half to secure the 15-8 win.

Morgan Pavlik led CMSV with three goals and an assist. Collen MacNeil and Sophia Roccolin added two goals each.

The Golden Eagles return to Danzi Stadium on Saturday, April, 3 when they host Farmingdale State at 12:30 pm.
