Women's Lacrosse Edged by Maritime, 9-8

Throggs Neck, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's lacrosse team fell just short of SUNY Maritime in a 9-8 defeat on Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles slide to 1-2 on the season and in conference play as the Privateers improve to 3-0 overall, 3-0 Skyline.

Sophomore Melissa Newman led St. Joseph's with four points on three goals and an assist.  Senior Tori Staker pitched in with two goals and an assist.

Freshman Sabrina Simonetti recorded a goal with two assists with sophomore Amanda Gennardo and freshman Alexa Cordingly finishing with a goal apiece.

Maritime was led by a four-goal performance from Nicole Johnson. Avery Jillson Neuwirth and Mackenzie Fabiani added two goals each with Sara Wright rounding out the scoring with one goal.

Staker broke a 3-3 stalemate with a free position goal ten minutes into the second half. The Privateers answered seconds later when Johnson won the following draw and found the back of the net knotting the game up again 4-4.

Simonetti connected with Newman who scored at the 19:26 mark giving SJC a 5-4 advantage, however, that would be their final lead of the evening as Maritime scored back-to-back goals and despite exchanging goals down the stretch the home team held off the Golden Eagles for the one-goal win.

SJC's Hummel finished with eight saves on the night with her counterpart Elizabeth Pomaro finishing with 11.

The Golden Eagles return to Danzi Stadium on Tuesday, April 13 when they host the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
