Brooklyn, NY| Behind a 24 point performance from senior Fernando Vazquez the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team held off Skyline Conference South Division rival St. Joseph's College (Brkln) for an 84-77 road win at the Hill Center on Wednesday evening.

With the victory the Golden Eagles end a five-game losing streak and improve to 2-9 (2-1 Skyline) on the season. The loss sends the Bears to 2-9 on the year and 0-4 in Skyline play.

For Vazquez, his game-best 24 points (5-7 3PG) was his best scoring performance since dropping 26 in a 82-77 loss to Yeshiva University back on December 4.

Junior Isaiah Moore shot 5-8 from the field and collected 19 points for the Golden Eagles, and senior Andy Laurent went for 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Bears were paced by Aaron Parra who shot 7-15 from the field and registered 17 points.

Long Island opened the contest with a 12-0 run to set the tone early and later led 30-19 with 8:36 remaining in the first half, but a 20-11 run by the hosts to end the frame ensured the Golden Eagles' lead at the break was by just two points (41-39).

Brooklyn took its first lead of the game at 14:27 of the second (52-50) and maintained a two-point edge (57-55) at 12:29, but a three-ball from freshman Joe Santoro (10 points, 3-5 FG) put Long Island back ahead (58-57) seconds later.

Tight through the next couple of minutes, the Golden Eagles--up 67-65 with 6:56 to play--used a quick 7-0 run to pull ahead 74-65 and rode off any Brooklyn attempt at a comeback to earn the 84-77 victory.

Long Island outshot Brooklyn from the field, from three and from the charity stripe and also outscored the Bears 20-12 off the bench. Brooklyn dominated the paint collecting 36 points to Long Island's 28 while also outrebounding the guests (44-33).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 7 when they head up to Riverdale, NY to face the College of Mount St. Vincent in a Skyline Conference contest at 3:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
