Men's Basketball Takes Down Lehman on Tuesday

Results:

On Tuesday evening, the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's basketball team earned an 85-60 non-conference win over Lehman College in their home opener at the Danzi Center.

Top performers:

  • Juniors Xavier Allen and Alec Tabada each scored a game-high 26 points to pace the Golden Eagles, with Allen recording 14 rebounds for a double-double while Tabada added eight boards

  • Senior Terrin Roy scored 13 points with three rebounds and a pair of assists

  • Senior Spencer Malloy added eight points, five rebounds, and three assists

  • The Lightning had two players finish in double-digits, as Jayden Stephens scored 11 points and DeAundre Manuel added 10

  • Kai Parris led Lehman College with six rebounds

How it happened:
  • St. Joseph's scored eight of the first 10 points to begin the game, then held a lead of seven (10-3) five minutes in on an Allen layup

  • An 8-2 run for Lehman College trimmed the hosts' lead to one (12-11), then the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-2 run fueled by Tabada's six points to go ahead 24-13

  • Allen proceeded to score nine straight points for SJLI, with the hosts leading by 11 (29-18) on his final basket of the run with 7:48 remaining in the half

  • The Lightning scored nine of the next 11 points to come within four on a basket for Manuel at the 5:45 mark (31-27), then Junior Thomas Bell responded with a three on their next possession to begin a 12-2 scoring run for the hosts to extend their lead to 43-29

  • The visitors scored seven of the final nine points in the half, but the Golden Eagles finished the half up by nine (45-36)

  • St. Joseph's held a lead of at least seven for the first five minutes of the second half

  • The lead got as small as six at the 12:40 mark (55-49) after an 8-1 run for the Lightning

  • Following a timeout, St. Joseph's scored six straight points before Tabada's three-point play gave the hosts a lead of 14 (64-50) with 9:17 remaining

  • 30 seconds later, Allen's three sparked an 8-0 run that featured five points for Roy, which put the Golden Eagles ahead 72-53

  • St. Joseph's finished the game with their largest lead of the night, as they led by 25 following a three for Sophomore AK Abusaab to come away with an 85-60 victory in their first home game of the season

  • St. Joseph's shot 57.1% (32-56) from the field and 50% from three-point range

  • Lehman College posted a 33.8% shooting percentage on a 22-65 showing from the field, and shot 21.1% from three-point territory

  • St. Joseph's shot 80% (12-15) from the free throw line compared to the Lightning's 52.2% (12-23) shooting on free throws

  • The Golden Eagles held the advantage in rebounds (43-33) and points in the paint (36-28)

  • Lehman College had 21 bench points compared to SJLI's eight

The Golden Eagles travel to Williamstown, Massachusetts, to participate in the Williams Purple and Gold Classic. They will play St. Lawrence University on Friday, November 17 at 8:00 pm.
