The St. Joseph's University-New York (L.I.) women's basketball team dropped their opening game of the Emmanuel College Tip-Off Classic to the Saints 59-47 on Saturday afternoon.
Top performers:

Senior Lanyah Ford led the way for the Golden Eagles with 14 points and four steals

Graduate Casey Travers added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals

Sophomore Megan Spina rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and four boards

Emmanual was led by an 18-point performance by Olivia Matela, who also dished a game-best five assists

Meagan Schurmann scored 14 points off the bench for the Saints and added a pair of assists
How it happened:

Emmanuel built a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes of play, but the Golden Eagles responded right away with seven points capped by five straight from Travers

A three from SJLI's Ford put the visitors ahead 10-7 before a Saints' bucked ended the quarter at 10-9

Tied at 16 with just over six minutes left in the second frame, Emmanuel went on a 6-0 run to move ahead 22-16

After an exchange of baskets between the teams, the hosts dropped in back-to-back field goals to head into the break leading 28-19

Emmanuel took its largest lead of the day late in the third quarter following a Schuermann bucket, 42-29

Sophomore Emma Kelly set up both Spina and senior Catherine Siounis jumpers to close the third with the Golden Eagles trailing 42-33

St. Joseph's chipped away at the Saints' lead to inch within five, 47-42, about midway through the fourth quarter, but Emmanuel a jump shot from Matela at the 3:01 mark extended the hosts' lead to double figures, 53-42, and they went on to secure the 59-47 win
