The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's basketball team picks up a 68-47 win over Yeshiva University in their conference opener at the Danzi Center on Tuesday evening.
Top performers:
- Senior Lanyah Ford paced the Golden Eagles with a game-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field while adding three rebounds, two assists, and two steals
- Graduate Casey Travers scored 16 points with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals
- Junior Isabella Sierra led the Golden Eagles with seven rebounds while scoring 13 points and adding three steals
- Yeshiva was led by Daniella Bessler, who recorded a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds
- Shai Rahamim and Yuval Nitzan each scored eight points for the Maccabees while adding six and seven rebounds, respectively
How it happened:
- St. Joseph's built an early lead, going on a 7-0 run to begin the game
- Yeshiva made just three baskets in the quarter, with their final basket of the quarter coming with 4:19 on the clock
- The Golden Eagles proceeded to go on a substantial 17-0 run in the final four minutes of the quarter, which was led by Ford's six points and Sierra's five, as the hosts finished the first quarter with a commanding 28-7 lead
- St. Joseph's continued that momentum in the second, scoring the first six points of the quarter to extend their lead to 34-7 at the 4:44 mark
- Yeshiva was limited to five points in the second quarter and 12 in the first half, with the hosts finishing the second quarter up by 25 (37-12)
- SJLI scored eight of the first 12 points in the third quarter, with four of those coming from Ford
- The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the night with 3:48 remaining in the third, as Sierra's layup gave SJLI a 30-point lead (49-19)
- The Maccabees scored seven straight points in the final two and a half minutes of the quarter, with Bessler scoring five of them, but St. Joseph's still led by 23 (53-30) going into the final frame
- Yeshiva out-scored SJLI 9-5 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, with Jasmin Maly-Danker making a pair of three-point shots to trim the lead to 19 before the Golden Eagles went back ahead by 24 (63-39)
- St. Joseph's maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game, leading by at least 19 in the final quarter
- Freshman Rebecca Vitale's three-pointer at the 1:56 mark capped the scoring for St. Joseph's, as they began conference play with a 68-47 victory
