Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Salve Regina

Newport, RI| Senior Casey Hickey scored six times as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team held off Salve Regina's fourth-quarter barrage to earn a 13-9 victory in Newport, RI on Sunday afternoon.

The win sees the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0 on the year as the Seahawks drop to 2-2.

Hickey was credited with seven shots in the game and recorded the game-winning goal 6:48 into the fourth quarter. The midfielder also scooped up three ground balls.

Sophomore Zak Jones went for three goals on five shots while senior Matt Prokesch, sophomore Chris Nielsen and freshman Michael Benasutti contributed a goal and an assist each.

In only his second collegiate appearance, sophomore keeper Adam Sivon made 20 saves on 29 shots. Junior defender Christian Prate caused a game-high three turnovers.

Hickey and Jones got the guests on the board early, with tallies at 11:46 and 10:57 to give SJC a early 2-0 lead, but the Seahawks scored twice over the next 10 minutes to ensure the score was tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Three goals apiece in the second saw the score tied, 5-5, at halftime, but a four-goal run by the Golden Eagles over the second half's opening nine minutes put St. Joseph's in control (9-5).

Salve's tally 1:35 into the fourth capped off a three-goal run by the hosts--a streak snapped by Hickey's mark 4:13 later (10-8).

The Seahawks brought the contest back to within one at 6:26, but it was the closest they'd come to trying the game as St. Joseph's held off the ensuing attack and potted a trio of goals in the final four minutes, securing the 13-9 win.

The triumph came despite SJC being outshot 53-23 in the contest. Most of Salve's pressure came on man-up situations, where they converted three times on nine attempts.

Declan Canevari was successful on faceoffs, winning 15 of 24 draws.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 6 when they host Marywood University. Gametime is set for 7:00 pm.
